Transvulcania

Well, an amazing trip to the canary islands and the small island of La Palma for a marathon up a volcano.

Part of the International Sky Running Federation ISF world series Transvulcania is an iconic race of the world, and I can see why.

The views and scenery were amazing, so much red, there was sand rocks, beautiful forests but for me the best aspect of the race was the support.  The people of La Palma seem to really have taken this race to their hearts.  Support from locals all the way, unofficial water stops where residents have set up out side their homes to help all of the athletes with glasses of water, buckets over your head or with hoses.  Lots of cheering and support despite the race having been on for several hours.

The race was tough with a lot of heat, dust and wind on the trail but to look over the edge and see the clouds far below you was incredible.  The other competitiors as always on these events were friendly and considerate throughout.  With a 10 mile very steep descent at the finish it takes its toll on your quads but the cheers from the crowd that you can hear for over a mile away draw you closer to that finish line.

The Transvulcania event team run a half marathon, a marathon and an ultra marathon over the same course, I will definitely be returning to this race.
