Stick-fighter becomes New European Champion

Guba Doce Pares student Gordon Rainbird of Colchester has returned from Wroclaw in Poland having become the WEKAF (World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation) European champion.  WEKAF is the largest stick fighting organisation in the world allowing competitors from any style of stick-fighting to compete together to find out who truely is the best.

This was Gordon's first international tournament after claiming Bronze in the British Open Championships earlier this year and was duely selected to be part of the British squad.

Gordon has been training hard with Grand Master Danny Guba (London), Phill of Ireland Fitness (Dartford) and Jonathan Westley (Colchester) in preparation for this challenge.

Gordon has improved significantly since the British Open in March and showed this by dominating the single stick division to become Champion. Gordon also showed his level of improvement by winning a Bronze medal in the Double Stick category which he pushed very hard in, with 2 of the fights going to deciding forth rounds.

Gordon's next target will be the British Doce Pares in October and then the British WEKAF tournament in November, which is part of the selection process for the GB team for next years WEKAFWorld Championships in Cebu, Phillippenes; the home of Stick-fighting.  Gordon will be someone people will watch out for in these next championships!

Gordon has recently started up a Guba Doce Pares class in East Bergholt Sports Centre in Colchester, Suffolk.  Classes are open to all abilities and ages, contact Gordon on 0787 386 9191 for more information.
